Ozymandias – Percy Bysshe Shelley: Breaking Bad

With the final installments of the hit TV show Breaking Bad looming, a teaser trailer was recently released in which the chief character Walter White recites Percy Bysshe Shelley’s famous poem ‘Ozymandias’. Fans of the show will understand why this thrilling poem was a remarkably apt choice for the storyline. However, if you don’t follow the show you can still enjoy the video as it does not reveal anything about the show itself – no spoilers and no confusion!

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:

Sonnet XVII – Pablo Neruda: Patch Adams

Another beautiful sonnet by another wonderful poet was read to us in the film Patch Adams, the true-story of Dr. Hunter “Patch” Adams. In this scene, Patch, a patient-turned-medical student is seen mourning the death of this girlfriend. In her honour, Patch recites part of Pablo Neruda’s Sonnet XVII (Sometimes referred to by it’s first line I Do Not Love You).

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,

Sonnet 29 – William Shakespeare: Read by Al Pacino (various films and shows)

I can confidently say that this is by far my favourite Shakespearean sonnet. Simply called Sonnet 29, it is simple and beautiful and has therefore been mentioned and recited in film and television many times over the years. It has featured in all sorts of places, from Star Trek to Pretty Woman, which is why I’m baffled as to why I can not seem to find an actual clip of the sonnet being recited in any such form.

Of course, that’s no reason to overlook this masterpiece, and what better way to hear it than from the lilting voice of the great Al Pacino?

And look upon myself and curse my fate,

Resume – Dorothy Parker: Girl, Interrupted

Too often known simply as Brad Pitt’s other half, it is easily forgotten that Angelina Jolie has a very impressive body of work behind her. In the acclaimed film Girl, Interrupted, Jolie’s character Lisa recites a poem by Dorothy Parker. Undisputedly one of her finest roles, with perfect ease Jolie portrays a character with a history of self-harm who has spent much of her life in institutes. Though some may find it morbid, this short and clever poem fits perfectly in the film and no doubt stuck in the minds of its viewers.

Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;

And drugs case cramp;

When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer – Walt Whitman: Breaking Bad

David Costabile played lovable loser Gale Boetticher on everyone’s favourite show; Breaking Bad. (Maybe not everyone’s, but if you’re going to watch a show about a high school chemistry teacher who decides to start selling meth, it should be this one.)

Gale, a self-proclaimed nerd, is a lover of Walt Whitman, and one afternoon he recites one of Whitman’s poems to Walter White.

When I heard the learn’d astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

Eloisa to Abelard – Alexander Pope: Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

  How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot!
  The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
  Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
  Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d;

This poem is where the film actually finds its title. Only a small part of the poem was quoted by Mary’s character, but you can find the full text below. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is a powerful film that raises many philosophical questions and leaves you loving not only your successes, but your mistakes too.

Written by the great Alexander Pope and published in the year 1717, the poem, almost like a novella in its length, tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers.

    In these deep solitudes and awful cells,
Where heav’nly-pensive contemplation dwells,
And ever-musing melancholy reigns;
What means this tumult in a vestal’s veins?
Why rove my thoughts beyond this last retreat?
Why feels my heart its long-forgotten heat?
Yet, yet I love!—From Abelard it came,
And Eloisa yet must kiss the name.

Relentless walls! whose darksome round contains
Repentant sighs, and voluntary pains:
Ye rugged rocks! which holy knees have worn;
Ye grots and caverns shagg’d with horrid thorn!
Shrines! where their vigils pale-ey’d virgins keep,

The darksome pines that o’er yon rocks reclin’d

See in her cell sad Eloisa spread,
Propp’d on some tomb, a neighbour of the dead.
In each low wind methinks a spirit calls,

From yonder shrine I heard a hollow sound.
“Come, sister, come!” (it said, or seem’d to say)
“Thy place is here, sad sister, come away!
Once like thyself, I trembled, wept, and pray’d,
Love’s victim then, though now a sainted maid:
But all is calm in this eternal sleep;

Ev’n superstition loses ev’ry fear:
For God, not man, absolves our frailties here.”

I come, I come! prepare your roseate bow’rs,
Celestial palms, and ever-blooming flow’rs.
Thither, where sinners may have rest, I go,
Where flames refin’d in breasts seraphic glow:
Thou, Abelard! the last sad office pay,
And smooth my passage to the realms of day;
See my lips tremble, and my eye-balls roll,
Suck my last breath, and catch my flying soul!

The hallow’d taper trembling in thy hand,
Present the cross before my lifted eye,
Teach me at once, and learn of me to die.
Ah then, thy once-lov’d Eloisa see!
It will be then no crime to gaze on me.
See from my cheek the transient roses fly!
See the last sparkle languish in my eye!
Till ev’ry motion, pulse, and breath be o’er;

When this rebellious heart shall beat no more;

From the full choir when loud Hosannas rise,
And swell the pomp of dreadful sacrifice,

One human tear shall drop and be forgiv’n.

I Go Back To May (1937) – Sharon Olds: Into The Wild

This poem is featured in a film that never fails to inspire the poet in me. For me, Into The Wild is that one film that I can’t help but tell everyone I meet that they simply must watch it. Soon. The film references many great writers, from Byron to Thoreau, and is itself a true story not to be forgotten too quickly.

In the film, the protagonist, Chris, reads this poem to his sister with no subtleties about the fact that it reminds him of their own parents. The poem is beautiful and honest. Unfortunately, the first line of the poem is missing from the video I have included above, but you will find the full poem below.

I see them standing at the formal gates of their colleges,
I see my father strolling out
under the ochre sandstone arch, the
red tiles glinting like bent
plates of blood behind his head, I
see my mother with a few light books at her hip
standing at the pillar made of tiny bricks with the
wrought-iron gate still open behind her, its
sword-tips black in the May air,
they are about to graduate, they are about to get married,
they are kids, they are dumb, all they know is they are
innocent, they would never hurt anybody.
I want to go up to them and say Stop,
don’t do it–she’s the wrong woman,

Funeral Blues – W.H. Auden: Four Weddings And A Funeral

For the inaugural post on this blog I have chosen a beautiful poem by W. H. Auden which many people will remember from the film ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’.

W. H. Auden was an English poet, who died in 1973 at the age of 66. The final version of Funeral Blues (sometimes simply referred to as Stop All The Clocks) was written in 1938.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
